The Star That Points to Jesus

Scripture Reading

Numbers 24:17

"I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near: a star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel."

Have you ever been amazed by how long some people wait for something they really want? Maybe you've counted down the days to Christmas, or waited eagerly for a new movie release. But imagine waiting not just days or months, but hundreds of years! This prophecy about Jesus was given around 1400 years before His birth. Through Balaam, God promised that a special star would mark the coming of a great king from Jacob's line.

When we think about Christmas, we often picture the star that guided the wise men to Jesus. But this star wasn't just a pretty light in the sky – it was a sign that God keeps His promises, even if we have to wait a really long time. Just like that star led people to Jesus back then, God still provides signs and people to point us toward Him today. Sometimes these guides come in unexpected ways: a friend's kindness, a song that touches our heart, or even a difficult situation that makes us look up to God.

The prophecy also mentions a scepter, which is a rod that kings carry to show their authority. This tells us that Jesus wouldn't just be born as a tiny baby – He would grow up to be a King with real power and authority. But unlike earthly kings who rule by force, Jesus came to rule through love and sacrifice. He's the kind of king who serves His people and gives His life for them.

Questions to Ask Yourself

1. What signs has God used in your life to point you toward Jesus? Think about people, events, or circumstances that have helped you see God more clearly.

2. How does knowing that God fulfilled this prophecy after 1400 years change the way you think about waiting for answers to prayer?

3. For deeper reflection: The prophecy came through Balaam, who wasn't one of God's faithful followers. What does this tell us about how God can work through unexpected people and situations to accomplish His purposes?

Prayer

Dear Father, thank You for being a God who keeps Your promises, even when the waiting seems long. Help us to recognize the ways You're pointing us to Jesus today. Give us patience when we're waiting for answers, and eyes to see Your work in unexpected places. Thank You for sending Jesus to be our perfect King. Help us to follow His example of loving leadership in our own lives. In Jesus' name, Amen.
