Work and Rest within God's Care

For the last few years, I've taken time in the Fall to reflect on life in our church and consider where God is calling us. This Fall, I've been reflecting on the themes of work and rest. But first, let me provide some context for this reflection:

Because of the reality of sin in our lives, it's easy for us to get off track. Even good things can be taken to unhealthy extremes. God has given each of us various callings. But sometimes we rush from one thing to another, mistaking busyness for faithfulness. Or we can operate from an individualistic perspective, believing we are responsible for all the good that happens in our lives—or blaming ourselves for all the bad. These errors can lead us astray, causing shame or burnout. This year's passage draws our attention to an important truth: while we do have a calling, our calling is expressed within the care of God.

“Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat— for he grants sleep to those he loves.”

 (Psalm 127:1–2, NIV)
