December 15th - the Promise of Resurrection
Reading of Scripture:
"you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay." (Psalm 16:10)
During this Advent season, we often focus on the joy and celebration of Jesus's birth. Yet tucked within the promise of His coming is also the remarkable assurance of His resurrection. David, writing centuries before Jesus's birth, prophetically speaks of God's faithfulness that extends beyond the grave.
In times of uncertainty, we might feel abandoned or forgotten. Perhaps you've experienced moments when it seemed like God was distant, or when circumstances felt overwhelming. David's words remind us that even in our darkest moments, God's presence remains steadfast. He doesn't simply walk with us through life – He holds us secure even in death.
This verse points directly to Jesus, who would later fulfill this prophecy through His death and resurrection. When Jesus was laid in the tomb, it might have seemed to His followers that all hope was lost. But God had made a promise, one that reached beyond the constraints of death itself. Just as He promised, Jesus's body did not see decay, and on the third day, He rose triumphantly.
As we prepare our hearts for Christmas, let's remember that the baby in the manger came with the ultimate purpose of conquering death. The incarnation and resurrection are inseparably linked – God became flesh not just to live among us, but to die for us and rise again, paving the way for our own resurrection. This advent season invites us to celebrate not just the birth of Jesus, but the complete story of God's redemptive plan.
Further Reading:
"But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him." (1 Corinthians 15:20-23)
Ask the Following Questions:
1. How does knowing that God's promise extends beyond death impact how you face your daily challenges?
2. In what ways do you see the connection between Jesus's birth and resurrection in your understanding of salvation?
3. Consider the phrase "faithful one" in Psalm 16:10. How does Jesus's perfect faithfulness complement or complete our imperfect faith?
Prayer:
Loving Father, during this Advent season, help us to see the fuller picture of Your redemptive plan. Thank You for sending Jesus not only to be born among us but to die and rise again for our salvation. Strengthen our faith as we remember that Your promises extend beyond our earthly lives. Give us courage to face our daily challenges knowing that You are faithful to complete the good work You've begun in us. Help us to live in light of the resurrection, even as we prepare to celebrate the incarnation. In Jesus's name, Amen.
